My Superpower

My son is what you might think of when you think of typical boy. Rambunctious. Energetic. Loves to play with superheroes, nerf guns, legos. All of that energy often brings about reckless behavior. No matter how much I try to watch him like a hawk, there are times {usually thanks to his slightly clumsy nature} that my boy will get an ouchie.

Scraped knees, bonked heads, you name it. The tears come and my usually independent little man suddenly looks for mama. He needs that reassurance. He needs my loving touch. With just a simple kiss, mama can make all the hurt go away. I cherish these moments. Not because I relish his pain, but I adore that for the moment, I can fix his hurts with a kiss.

I know the day will come when a kiss simply won’t make it go away. And I fear that some of his hurts may be worse than a bonk on the head. I can try to raise my son to be a strong, independent young man, but unfortunately, there are those in the world who will take pleasure in tearing him down. I know they say sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me, but I know how painful words can be. It makes me sad to think that one day he may take the bullies to heart and in that day a kiss from mama will not make it better.

For now, we’ll carry on. We’ll face the struggles as they come and this mama will be a superhero in her sons eye’s. My superpower: healing with a kiss. What’s yours?
