Chick Chat

I really meant to link up last week, but I got lazy so I was determined this week. I'm joining up with the lovely Jessica at The Tangerine for  .... drumroll......

Can I start this post by saying I hate when people call women chicks. I can’t claim it’s because I’m uber feminist; it’s just on of those pet peeves. Having said that, it doesn’t stop me from enjoying some Chick Lit.
An interesting question stems from this love. What exactly is Chick lit? According to “In the Classroom or in the Bedroom” it is any fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and lightheartedly.  For me, I sum it up in just a few words. Cheesy. Romantic. Enjoyable.

When I look for a book from this genre, I’m looking for something I can read without a whole lot of deep thought. A breezy read that I can be interrupted from without wanting to cut the person who broke my reading trance.

My most recent foray into the genre was by an author who’s books I frequent, Sophie Kinsella.  Her Shopaholic Series was one of my favorite fun reads in high school. It coordinated with the days of Queer Eye For the Straight Guy and eventually they made a movie out of Confessions of a Shopaholic.  Her newest book, Wedding Night, is an enjoyable read, but I will admit there were moments when I wanted to reach into the book and slap some sense into the characters.  The premise of the story is a failed relationship leading to a spur of the moment decision to marry “the one that got away” all while the sister of the Bride tries to stop her from making a terrible mistake.  Shenanigans ensue. Love springs from unexpected places. It has all the elements of a fun read, but not something I ever have to read again.

Another good author for the genre is Meg Cabot. Many people may know her from her Princess Diaries series, but she writes books for grown ups too. Size Twelve is Not Fat is a humorous look at a washed up teen idol who happens to fall right into a murder mystery with a little sleuthing of her own and a little love mixed in, humorous hijinx make this book a quick fun read.

It’s been awhile since I’ve really delved into this genre so I won’t bore you with more synopses, but I will say if you’re looking for a quick easy read, some other great options: Bridget Jones’ Diary {Helen Fielding} Gone with a Handsomer Man { Michael West} and while it’s not fiction and thus technically doesn’t fit within my box of Chick Lit, MWF seeking  BFF { Rachel Bertsche}.

What are your favorite picks?

I like your three-word synopsis of chick lit haha. I was really surprised to find books like "The Help" and "The Time Traveler's Wife" on chick lit lists I found online when preparing my post, but I think that's because I agree with your definition, and those books are NOT cheesy to me. Glad to see another linker this week! :)

I don't think I've ever read a Meg Cabot book, I'll have to check her out ;)
